Brooklyn, NY, 10/31.
Hi, friends! Today is @sawyermine’s 3-year anniversary! Every day for since October 31, 2014, I’ve taken a self portrait. I originally began because I felt that narratives of transgender people’s lives were being represented in television, in movies, in magazines and on the internet incorrectly. They mainly focused on victimization and violence, completely overshadowing the every day- sometimes monotonous, often beautiful, and always enlightening. .
Through monotony, I’d hoped to show something so simple, which is obvious to people who are lucky to know trans people, but not so obvious to folks who don’t- that trans people are just people.
Through beauty, I’d hoped to show my voice, my style, my work. I heard both Way ( @jillsoloway) and Denis ( @ohdenis) speak about the importance of creating their own work and being able to share their voice. They inspired me to create my own work, something I wanted to see in the world, something I wish I had to inspire me when I was younger. I think the most attractive trait in someone or something is authenticity, and by being as transparent and real as I could, I hoped it would be seen as beautiful and truthful, where it could also be seen as messy or contrived. .
I’m so grateful to everyone who’s taken the time to look at my photos, comment on them, send me messages, stop me in public to say hi and give me a hug, hire me to model for them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope this photo series gives you as much as it has given me. .
